Variac Construction

The design of Variac Construction is really quite simplistic and is most commonly  described as a tapped inductor.  A good place to begin is with an important feature of Variac Construction, which is the "tap" or conductive slider.  The conductive slider of a variac is designed to move along the entire length of the inductor.  The variac slider is designed with a rotational carbon contact which rotates on an axle at the axis of the inductor. Variac Construction of the inductor is in a doughnut, or toriod, shape.  The doughnut features wire which is wrapped radically through it’s center and then around it. 

At this point, Variac Construction takes a departure from other types of transformers such as an isolation transformer, which only has isolated input and output windings.  In contrast, Variac Construction utilizes a single winding which not only acts as the input source but also the output source.

 Variac Construction comes to life when carbon contact touches the winding and the enamel insulation of the winding wire is removed.  This process is much like the carbon brush of an electric motor.  The end result is that the contact forms a circuit and voltage is born.  This resulting voltage is then pulsed through the winding.  As the pulsed voltage moves across areas of the winding, higher, or lower, voltages are achieved across different portions of the same winding.

Variac Construction involves the connection of lower voltage to one end of the winding and a tap with connection of higher voltage to the ends of the winding.  These connections produce impendence which is split between the input into separate parts.  This divided impendence when connected to the output is what determines the output voltage of a variac transformers.  The power consumed by the variac is applied directly to the load almost entirely.   It is good to note that some heating effects may occur due to winding resistance and magnetic coupling. 

Variac Construction most commonly includes two types of models which are the open frame and bench models.  They are differentiated as follows:

• Open frame – designed to be an integral part of a larger piece of equipment incorporating panel mounting or equipment racks.  Easily identified with exposed inductor and electrical connections.

• Bench – designed with a control knob on top and a ventilated metal shield which houses the winding.  Other components of this design include an on/off switch, ac outlets, fuse, line cord and at times, a current or voltage meter.
