Variac Applications

Variac Applications are many and varied but they all fall within the power parameters designated by the variac itself.  Because variacs are designed for specific frequencies and input voltages, Variac Applications will not include those requiring different inputs.  This is based on the fact that although variacs offer a voltage adjustable AC current, only the variac’s output is intended to be variable.  It should also be noted that a variacs output, current, rating should not be exceeded.

Most Variac Applications begin with a variac that is connected to a wall outlet which is 120v at 60 hertz in the US.  Variac Applications are controlled via a knob with output ranging from 0v AC (VAC) to 140VAC, depending upon the connection.  Due to this configuration, variacs are not well suited for directly powered, low voltage, devices.  Because variacs do not operate as true transformers, they do not isolate line voltages from wall outlets.  Variacs are not normally used as a permanent source of voltage adjustable power but are commonly used for equipment testing, repair, experimental circuits, and tube audio applications.

Because variac transformers provide the essential service of controlling voltages, they are also commonly utilized in laboratory and industrial environments where they are used to control electro-mechanical forces such as the following:

• Power

• Voltage

• Current

• Heat

• Light

• Speed

In these Variac Applications environments, the output voltage is varied by a full turn of the variac’s control shaft.  Speed, light, and/or heat of the load is varied from zero to the line voltage or 17% above.  A variac can double the voltage while still providing full control of the output if the line voltage is half of what is required by the load. 

Other Variac Applications include phase shifters in three phase circuitry and as a color temperature controllers working in conjunction with calibrating voltmeters, ammeters, and watt meters. 

Variac applications that require portability have their power source requirements met in the form of the bench top variac.  These portable variacs are often used by service shops and field installation teams because they can meet the operational parameters of their users where ever they may, logistically, be.
