Choosing Variacs

Choosing Variacs can appear to be a daunting task but it really need not be when you have the proper information at your disposal.  There are several keys areas that should be identified early on to help you with Choosing Variacs that are best for you.  Our team of variacs specialists are here to assist you with that process, offering advice every step of the way.

Choosing Variacs begins with the understanding that variacs are commonly grouped by voltage,  line frequency,  and phase.  Increased load ratings can be shown as either current (amperes) or power (kVA).  When Choosing Variacs it is essential to know the line and load characteristics for your specific application.  A further breakdown of how to identify these characteristics is listed as follows:

• Voltage – Single phase lines are traditionally either 120V or 240V and variacs are available to match these voltages.  If your line voltage is less than nominal, a variac rated for the nominal value will operate fine with no derating in current.  If over voltage output is not required, line voltage up to 17 percent above normal can be applied. If the single phase line voltage ranges from 480V – 560V, two variacs with connecting coils must be utilized.  The connection is made in a series across the load and line are connected with one side to each variac output.  In this scenario, the load cannot be grounded.

• Line frequency – Variacs are often grouped by line frequencies with many models designated for 50Hz – 60Hz operation.  Other models can be utilized without being derated up to 400Hz but more size and weight is necessary and regulation will be greater than normal.  There are also variacs designed for 350Hz – 1200Hz which have better regulation at high frequencies and are smaller in size.  These variacs can also be connected in a series or custom ordered to operate from 240V lines.

• Phase – Variacs are commonly available in both single and three phases.  The governance of three phase variacs is determined by the ratings of each individual transformer in it’s assembly.  The voltage or current from each individual unit must not exceed  that of what’s specified for single phase usage. 

• Load Rating – Load capacities are often specified as power in kVA, maximum current and rated current in amperes.  These specifications are related but different enough that it will make a difference in your variac selection.  Power ratings in kVA are indicate the matching of the variac to the load and are simply given as a convenience.  Three phase applications often show their power ratings in kVA.  When it comes to current, chose a variac that is rated current adequate for the load if an over voltage connection is used to apply line voltage to the load or if the load is nonlinear.  Otherwise, the load rating limit is the largest maximum current.  In certain applications higher current may be permitted to be drawn.

It is important to note that variac voltage can be doubled if the available line voltage is half that required by the load.  In spite of the doubling, there will still be full control of the output.  Some variacs are supplied with an input connection for their use.  Output current ratings on this type of transformer are one half the normal value.  TEMCo can custom design other connections for multiplying ratios to meet your specific power source needs..
