State-of-the-Art Variac Manufacturer Offering Top Quality at Wholesale PricesVariacsVariacs are an important part of the transformer family and play a critical role as a variable transformer. Variacs, or variable transformers as they are often called, are widely used within the power source industry and provide a source of adjustable AC power. A variac transformer employs a single winding which has been tapped at some point along the winding. A variac transformer's windings employ at least three taps or electrical connections. Connected to two of the taps are the voltage load and sources. One tap at the end of the winding is utilized as a common connection to both voltage load and source circuits. Load and source voltage each correspond to their own taps. In addition, a portion of the variac transformer’s windings also act as primary and secondary windings. Exposure of part of their winding enables a secondary connection utilizing a sliding carbon bush. This configuration allows a nearly continuous turns ratio and allows for wide voltage adjustments in small increments. The two most common types of variac transformers are open frame and bench models which we explore further on this site. A variac transformer offers the versatility of operating like a step up transformer or a step down transformer. This flexibility makes the variac is a common choice for applications where adjustable voltages are required. Applications where Variacs are commonly employed include the following engineering applications:
How Do Variacs Work? The operation of Variacs is pretty straightforward and basically involves higher, or lower, voltage which is pulsed across portions of the winding to produce the desired effect. Variacs act as a tapped inductor with a conductive slider moving along it’s length. Featuring a doughnut shaped inductor, the windings are wrapped through it’s center. The enameled, magnetic, windings are wound tightly around the core with each end securely fastened and lacquered to the core. The enamel on the winding places an important role, whereby it’s insulation is removed when in contact with the carbon on the slider. This process of enamel removal, forms the circuit voltage that is pulsed through parts of the windings. AC, or pulsed voltage, is applied across a portion of the winding, and a higher (or lower) voltage is produced across another portion of the same winding. The higher voltage will be connected to the ends of the winding, and the lower voltage from one end to a tap. Lower voltage is connected from the tap to one end and higher voltage is connected to the winding ends. Through this process, impendence is divided between the input into separate parts. Variacs output voltage is determined by the divided impedance which is connected to the output. In the case of a variac transformer, the power consumed goes directly to the load almost in it's entirety. Resistance of the windings and magnetic coupling might create some undesirable heating effects but a variac has still proven to be a highly effective and efficient power source solution.
